Alonso Lobo: Missa Beata Dei genitrix
Saturday 18th March 2017 - 7:30pm
Pre-concert talk by Bruno Turner - 7pm
St Sepulchre-without-Newgate, EC1A 2DQ
Director: David Allinson
To mark 400 years since the death of Alonso Lobo – pupil of Francisco Guerrero and one of Spain’s greatest composers – we were delighted to present the first performance of Bruno Turner’s newly-made edition of the beautiful Missa Beata Dei genitrix. Written in a rich and closely-wrought style, it is one of only two Mass settings by Lobo for six voices.
We also sang some of the most impressive music: the impassioned Lamentations, the monumental double-choir Ave Maria and his powerful masterpiece written on the death of Philip II of Spain, Versa est in luctum.
The concert was preceded by a talk from the President of the Renaissance Singers, Bruno Turner.
