In 1605 and 1607, William Byrd published a large collection of short motets known as Gradualia - settings of the propers of the catholic Mass (Introit, Gradual, Alleluia Offertory and Communion) for the various feasts of the church's year.  These are intensely personal compositions designed to be sung in secret, at a time when catholics were being persecuted. Even though Byrd was an old man when they were written, the Gradualia are full of energy and vitality.  In this workshop we will explore some of this miraculous and varied repertoire including Justorum Animae, the Offertory text for All Saints Day.

David Gould was a chorister at Salisbury Cathedral, a choral scholar at St John's College Cambridge and a lay clerk at Westminster Cathedral. He is a very experienced consort singer and member of the Cardinall's Musick, whose 13 CDs of the Latin church music of Byrd have won critical acclaim.

Covid-19 risk mitigations measures will be in place for this live event, details of which can be obtained through the button below.
